“Phone Book” (#225: Project 365 Sketches)
2013, Tue 13 Aug. He was reading an ebook on his mobile phone. It occurred to me “ebooks” are called that because they started as “electronic books” and were meant for reading on desktop computers. In my mind, Project Gutenberg was the first to introduce the concept of an electronic books platform on a large scale (not even digitised books, for efficient digitisation technology was some years later). The ‘e-texts’ were meant for reading on desktop computers or, less affordable then, on laptops. Mobile phones were some ways off before they could be considered to be true computing devices. So, had something like Project Gutenberg came at the time mobile phones were accepted as reading devices, we might call ebook as “phone books”, might we not?
