Poem: Recall

sometimes i get
spontaneous flashes
of random memories

irreverent snapshots of life’s
moments, processed
in my mind’s darkroom
without my being aware

no details of context
only specific acts of
embarrassment involving
myself, more often than not —

like this recent recall
of a meeting where i
made a bubbly remark in jest
that fizzled flat

or this sudden image
of me taking the lift, and
i’d forgotten to thank
the man who held the door open —

incidental images like that
that weave in and out
from my mind’s eye
